Porsche is bringing back the gearbox in the 2027 Taycan (virtually, at least)

By Weixian Low 24 June, 2026

Missing the mechanical jolt of a perfectly timed downshift? Porsche’s latest model year update for the all-electric Taycan introduces an ingenious E-Shift system to satisfy your analog cravings, alongside a seriously upgraded digital brain

The transition to electric vehicles brought drivers face-melting acceleration and eerie cabin silence, but it also quietly stole something precious from the driving purist: the visceral, unapologetic kick of a gear change. Porsche, clearly understanding that absolute, uninterrupted smoothness can occasionally border on the clinical, has devised a clever solution for the 2027 model year Taycan. Enter the newly optional E-Shift system: an electric powertrain that enthusiastically role-plays as a combustion engine.

Operating via paddles mounted on the GT-sports steering wheel, E-Shift provides eight simulated gears for drivers who miss the mechanical theatre of the track. It isn’t just a gimmick of numbers flashing on the instrument cluster, too; Porsche has engineered actual, noticeable “shift jerks” and gear-specific drag torque to simulate the engine-braking behaviour of a petrol car. Peg the virtual rev limiter, and the reinterpreted Porsche Electric Sport Sound realistically adapts to the load and speed. It is multisensory mechanical nostalgia, available across the range and fitted as standard on the Turbo GT.

But the Taycan isn’t entirely preoccupied with the analog past. Its silicon brain has received a massive upgrade, with a new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system boasting five times the computing power of the outgoing model. This banishes menu lag and introduces the new Porsche Digital Interaction concept, an uncluttered layout loaded with smartphone-style widgets.

At the centre of the display sits a highly detailed, smoothly rotatable 3D model of your exact Taycan, rendered in your specific paint colour. A complementary Themes app allows you to sync the display colours and ambient lighting with the car’s exterior — because if you’ve spent days agonising over the perfect shade of blue, you should get to admire it from the inside, too.

The digital glow-up continues with an AI-supported Voice Pilot that now understands natural conversation. More importantly, it allows for follow-up questions without forcing you to repeatedly bark “Hey Porsche,” saving your sanity on long commutes. You can even command the electric charging flap to open using just your voice. Add in an upgraded 25-watt wireless charging tray, which juices your phone 1.5 times faster, and a new App Centre for video streaming, and the cabin feels decidedly next-gen.

The new model year also features an upgrade in infotainment, featuring a modern operating concept, enhanced smartphone integration and voice control with AI complements the update. Photo by Porsche

The updated Taycan proves that while the future of performance is undeniably electric, it doesn’t have to be entirely devoid of drama. The 2027 model is now available to order at Porsche Studio Singapore, with prices starting from a rather precise $408,288, excluding COE.
