The companies are set to compete with the likes of Apple and Meta
Samsung is pushing even further into the wearable-tech space.
The electronics company is working with Google to develop augmented-reality glasses, Bloomberg recently reported. The new project was confirmed by TM Roh, the president of Samsung’s Mobile Experiences unit, who told the outlet that they “will try to reach the quality and readiness we want as soon as possible.” He shared little additional details about the specs.
AR glasses, which place data and graphics on what you’re seeing in the real world, have been difficult to produce thus far, Bloomberg noted. Apple, Meta, and Google are all trying to make inroads in the field, but issues related to costs and engineering have led to slow progress. For its part, Meta is hoping to debut its Artemis AR glasses in 2027, the publication reported.
Samsung, meanwhile, is searching for areas of growth in its business, Bloomberg wrote, and wearable tech may be a vehicle toward success. Last year, the company debuted its Galaxy Ring, a smart ring that can track heart rate, blood-oxygen levels, and activity and stress levels, among other metrics. And just last month, the tech giant announced that it was teaming up with Google for the Project Moohan headset, a mixed-reality device that occupies a similar space as Apple’s Vision Pro.
The headset will likely come to market prior to Samsung’s AR glasses, with Roh telling Bloomberg that the company is still trying to figure out the release date and price, although it’s aiming for this year. And while items like the Vision Pro haven’t been doing too well with consumers, Samsung is hoping that its headset will be different: Roh said his company and Google are liaising with third parties to create original content for the device, in the hopes of making it a must-have piece of tech.
Both the headset and the AR glasses—when they arrive—will run on the new Android XR operating system, Bloomberg noted. Samsung and Google are working as one entity to develop the unified OS, which will power all sorts of wearable headsets from the companies. And with the Project Moohan headset potentially coming out this year, it may not be too long before we see that play out in reality—or augmented reality, that is.
