Date Night: At Sushisamba, enjoy stunning views, dancing and a union of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian treats

By Hannah Choo 11 October, 2024

Enter Sushisamba, a stunning 1,115-sqm space wrapped around in floor-to-ceiling windows and expansive views of the city’s skyline

What’s the story?

Brought to Singapore by the Sunset Hospitality Group, the same people behind swanky concepts like Mott 32, Azure Beach Club and The Aubrey, you can tell it is good vibes they are usually after. Which is what you will get at Sushisamba, a world-renowned dining and nightlife hotspot that originated in New York. At the very top of Capitol Tower, two elevators and 52 levels from below, you will find yourself in a stunning 1,115-sqm space wrapped around in floor-t0-ceiling windows and expansive views of the city’s skyline. Depending on where you’re seated, you may also enjoy views of the kitchen, complete with a robata counter, lush greenery and 3D-printed bamboo architecture. It’s definitely a vibe, filled with Afro House, Brazilian and Latin beats before Sushisamba’s iconic samba dancers and musicians join the party at sundown.

What’s the food like?

It’s reminiscent of Nikkei cuisine, but the team at Sushisamba begs to differ, calling it a creative union of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian techniques and flavours. The all-day menu dedicates itself to various (pricey, for what it’s worth) iterations of nigiri and rolls, ceviches and robatayaki. Skip anything with truffle (unless you like a lot of it), and give the following a shot: Skewered Chilean Sea Bass, marinated in white miso and grilled over the robata, is tender, sweet and deliciously smoky; Sea Bream ceviche, refreshing and flavoured with green chilli, cilantro and cancha corn; and Crispy Taquitos, available with five kinds of stuffing, are good with pork, smoked aji panca and pickled cabbage.

What else is there to know?

The cocktails are quite excellent, and even better than what we had at Samba Room, Sushisamba’s bar that sits above. We recommend Ryū’s Legend (sake, vodka, passion fruit, ginger and ‘dragon smoke’), Samba Corcovado (mezcal, dried chillies, yuzu, agave and spices), and the Mango and Yuzu Caipirinha (cachaça, mango, yuzu and kokuto sugar). If there’s anyone abstaining from alcohol, not to worry. There is tasty non-alcoholic tipple, cold-infused for over 48 hours so you know there’s maximum effort and maximum flavour.
