Master whisky maker Laura Rampling described The Glenrothes 42 as “part science, part alchemy and a little bit of magic,” and it is certainly the answer to the question: why is this whisky so good?
The number 42 may be the answer to almost everything in life but it is certainly not the answer to the question: how much is this bottle? The 42 is a rarity in itself; the assemblage of four of the oldest casks at The Glenrothes, yielding a mere 1,134 bottles. It is also the first time that the distillery has ever released a bottle of that age in its storied history. Master whisky maker Laura Rampling described her work as “part science, part alchemy and a little bit of magic,” and it is certainly the answer to the question: why is this whisky so good?
Taste test: The 42 is as vibrant as the colourful, contoured packaging it resides in. After surprising you with hints of floral notes, we return to familiar territory; it’s a beautifully balanced dram, with elements of a well-aged bourbon cask matured whisky transitioning seamlessly into facets of a refined sherry cask whisky, which then asserts its dominance. Yet, the familiar elements of The Glenrothes are all there. Caramelised sugar and honey form the foundation for apricots and oranges to mingle and dance on your palate and then gently fades, drying as it makes your mouth water as you plead for another round. Yours for S$12,488 from May 2023 onwards at Oak Cellars and 1855.
