The New Museum is reopening to the public again. After a decade of planning, a two-year overhaul and an US$82 million expansion, the new space on Manhattan’s Bowery will open this 21 March 2026, putting an end to exactly one year of hiatus.

At 5,574 square metres, the OMA-designed building will double the old footprint by SANAA. Led by Shohei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas in collaboration with Corgan, there will be a reimagined entrance plaza, new galleries and flexible programming space, with a new and improved flow throughout the building. Visitors will also be pleased with its bigger lobby, which will include a roomy bookstore, museum shop, and an art-filled, vegetable-forward restaurant with Julia Sherman as head chef.

To mark its grand opening, the inaugural, 200-artist exhibition, New Humans: Memories of the Future, will span the entirety of the museum, and commissions by artists Tschabalala Self, Klára Hosnedlová and Sarah Lucas seen in the entrance plaza, elevators and atrium stair.

‘[The] building on the Bowery signals our redoubled commitment to new art and new ideas, and to the museum as an ever-evolving site for risk-taking, collaboration, and experimentation,’ said museum director Lisa Phillips in a statement.
