The exhibition celebrates the artist’s legacy in art and gay culture

Art has always been a reflection of societal norms and values, evolving accordingly to the ever-shifting zeitgeist. What was once considered subversive or even obscene, can become celebrated and revered over time. Few artists have experienced this phenomenon as profoundly as Tom of Finland, whose provocative illustrations of homoeroticism have transitioned from underground culture to mainstream acclaim.

Born Touko Laaksonen, Tom of Finland first saw prominence after his drawings were published in niche magazines like Physique Pictorial in the 1960s. These drawings were later reproduced on flyers and paraphernalia that adorned the walls of gay bars.

That’s not to say his success can be attributed solely to the evolving societal values that came just before the turn of the century. Though renowned for challenging prevailing stereotypes and instilling a sense of pride and visibility within the queer community, his art, characterised by hyper-masculine figures and erotic themes, possess incredible artistic merit—often featuring a delicate use of light and shadow, akin to the chiaroscuro seen on traditional Italian paintings. Through this, his work evokes a subtle vulnerability that contrasts with the sheer hedonism on display.
