The president of the FIA, Jean Todt, has been a close friend of Richard Mille for years. In a gallant gesture of friendship and gratitude, Richard Mille made three models for Todt, commemorating 50 years of automotive passion and an exceptional track record. All limited editions, the RM 11-03, RM 050 and RM 056 Jean Todt series come with exciting technical enhancements ranging from movement improvements and never-before-seen case materials. In particular, the RM 050 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary dons a vibrant blue case fashioned out of quartz TPT. This is an extremely light but strong composite material obtained by stacking 600 layers of 45-micron-thick silica, and injecting it with blue resin, before heating at 120 degrees Celsius. The white streaking effect is natural and arbitrary, so every case is slightly different.
The watch has a tourbillon movement with a split-seconds complication, Calibre RMCC1, which is similar to the movement of the RM 008, but better. Specifically, it is 20 per cent lighter and the split-seconds mechanism is more energy efficient. Only five of these have been made, excluding the one already on Todt’s wrist, so if you’re looking to make a statement, look no further.
