“The most important lesson I have learnt is that lasting change is never created by one person—it is built through community.” – Amanda Chen-Lee

Many spend a lifetime searching for their purpose; others discover it unexpectedly. Amanda Chen-Lee belongs to the latter. Trained in advertising and branding, she found herself increasingly drawn to the stories of children and families during her time at Children’s Wishing Well, a children’s charity.

Motivated by a growing desire “to make a more meaningful difference in the lives of those I serve”, she reached out to one of the charity’s counsellors who introduced her to art therapy, a medium that brings together her background in art, interest in psychology, and passion for serving others.

That single conversation set her on a new path. She pursued a master’s in art therapy and went on to found Art for Good, extending the impact of art beyond the therapy room and into the wider community. Looking back, she reflects that she was discovering her calling.

Today, her work is guided by a simple yet enduring belief: “that art has the power to change lives, strengthen communities, and remind every individual that they are seen, heard, and valued”. Across therapy, community partnerships, and social impact initiatives, Lee has remained steadfast in translating that belief into meaningful change for individuals and communities alike.

Share an important lesson you’ve learnt through your work.

Lasting change is never created by one person, it is built through community. Healing does not happen in isolation. It happens when families feel supported, when communities choose inclusion over exclusion, when organisations are willing to listen, and when people come together with a shared purpose.

What keeps you going when things get tough?

I remind myself that every day is an opportunity to do good, both for myself and for others. I cannot pour from an empty cup, so I intentionally make time for practices that keep me grounded, such as meditation, yoga, and moments of reflection. Looking after my own well- being enables me to show up more fully for the people and communities I serve.

What’s one habit that has helped you in life and in your career?

Every few weeks, I make space to step away from the day-to-day demands of work to consider the bigger picture: whether my work remains aligned with my purpose, what I have learnt, and where my time and energy should be focused next.

What’s one thing you wish people understood better about your work?

I wish more people understood that art therapy is not about creating beautiful artwork or having artistic talent. It is about creating a safe space where people can explore thoughts and emotions that are often difficult to express through words alone.
I hope people come to see that creativity is not a luxury; it is a fundamental part of being human.

What’s the most valuable feedback you’ve ever received?

One piece of feedback that has stayed with me is that I do not need to have every answer before taking the next step. Earlier in my career, I sometimes felt that I needed complete clarity before making a decision. Over time, I have learnt that clarity often emerges through the journey itself.

What are you still trying to learn?

One area I continue to work on is learning to let go. As someone who cares deeply about my work, I naturally want to be involved in every detail. Over time, however, I have realised that leadership is not about doing everything myself, but about trusting and empowering others.

One piece of advice you often share with others?

I often remind people that resilience is not about never failing, but about having the courage to try again with greater wisdom. Throughout my career, I have learnt that meaningful change takes time, and setbacks are often opportunities to rethink, adapt, and grow. If something truly matters, I believe it is always worth finding another way forward.
