Date Night: The Fat Prince is back, louder, looser, and gloriously unpretentious

The Prince’s diet might have failed, but so did ours when we popped by for dinner

Formerly known as The Fat Prince, then The Prince, and now back to The Fat Prince, the restaurant has returned to the name (and mood) its diners loved most: casual, convivial, and a little bit cheeky.

The revival isn’t a reset so much as a return to form. The dining room hums with dim lights, bright spirits, and feels warmer, built for generous sharing plates and spirited cocktails. It’s Middle Eastern soul with a kiss of Mediterranean freshness, where the night stretches on because the conversations, and mezze, won’t quit.

Start the courtship the right way: with Egyptian house rolls and decadent date butter. Tear, swipe, and repeat–but hold some restraint for the show that follows. If you’re the type to graze, the mezze covers every mood: crispy calamari with lemon aioli, truffle-honey halloumi (our top pick), falafel with garlic yoghurt, and a trio of dips (cashew hummus, baba ganoush, muhammara) for the chronic double-dippers. From there, build your own kebabs and stack them as high as you please. The beloved Built-It section is back, and it’s still the most fun you can have with a pita.

Prefer to hand over the reins? Opt for the Feed Me six-course omakase-style menu; no decisions required. If you’re leaning large, the table-side drama comes from big, shareable plates: a Moroccan chicken tagine with chickpeas and olives; coal-fired branzino flanked by roasted vine tomatoes; and a lamb porterhouse glazed in apricot with spiced carrot puree.

Cocktails are not an afterthought here. The Fat Prince runs the gamut from full-proof to half-proof to zero-proof for every pace of evening. Expect signatures with swagger: Sultan’s Negroni tinged with za-atar and pomegranate molasses; Tahini Kiss, creamy and lush; and Mirage Mojito, a proof-free escape. The energy here is deliberately loosened up, and the programme carries you from dinner into drinks without missing a beat.

It seems to be all the rage now, so at the end of the night, don’t even think about leaving without the Dubai Chocolate Knafeh: crisp kataifi, molten dark chocolate, and a whisper of rose, finished with pistachio ice cream. It’s decadent, but also dangerously moreish. The message from The Fat Prince is simple: come hungry, laugh loud, and stay long. The Fat Prince is back, and he’s here to stay.
